Linden Labs Plans To Restict Inworld Adult Contact

A major part of Second Life's appeal is that people can make their avatars into anything they want: vampires, steampunks, fashion models and, of course, strippers and escorts. Sex sells in Second Life, just like it does in the real world; though there aren't any hard stats, adult and sex-related transactions make up a significant portion of the $35 million in real money that Linden Lab says filters through its virtual economy each month. But adult activities are also what has kept certain brands and companies from setting up shop in-world, so Linden Lab announced that it will be restricting such activities to an "Adult Continent."

In an official blog post, Linden Lab said the idea was to "improve Second Life for everyone" and "give residents more control over what they see." But VP of customer relations Cyn Linden also told New World Notes that it would help "businesses and education [groups] to feel more comfortable about what they encounter" in-world. The company said it would solicit feedback in its forums and message boards to come up with a working definition of adult activity, which could include "explicit sexual conduct or genitalia," "representations of intense violence" and "stimulated drug use," among other things. The changes are expected to roll out over the next few months.

The adults-only zone will be separate from the mainland; people who want access will need to be age-verified through either a credit card or Linden Lab's own verification service. Residents that own land earmarked for adult activities will not have to move, but they'll be required to rope off the area and set up age-verification controls. Adult-related content will also be filtered from the Google-powered search listings, meaning people will have to search for it explicitly.

Linden Lab has struggled with ethical and regulatory issues in Second Life in the past, including accusations of child pornography that forced it to ban "age-play," or the depiction of erotic activities using child avatars in 2007 (via Reuters). It also had to crack down on "banks" that promised residents sky-high interest rates for their "investments" and then collapsed, taking users' real-world money with them; the idea is to govern Second Life in a way that maximizes freedom, but keeps real-world authorities from stepping in. Second Pride Festival - 2009

Second Pride Festival 2009

What ?

The Second Pride Festival is a festival of the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transexual) Community. The concept and idea is similar to the well known Gay Pride celebrations held all around the world.
But this event does not concern people joining together anywhere in the real world, but in the virtual world of Second Life®, created by Linden Lab™. For the duration of the event, anybody with a Second Life account can connect to the Festival's location and join the celebration.
Various activities are available on site, such as visiting of the many vendor stands available to promote businesses or charities, GLBT locations and causes, discussions, debates, parties, amusement rides, and more...

What we do ?

To make the festival happen we set donation kiosks around Second Life. We use what we need to rent the sims and do the festival and we give all extra donations to a charity organisation chosen by us. SP09 is working with Amnesty International this year and their movement called Outfront, to support freedom of expression of the LGBT people and community around the globe. More info on : http://www.amnestyusa.org/lgbt-human-rights/page.do?id=1011002

When ?
May 23rd thru May 30th 2009

We also have some events prior to the main festival, such as benefits and promotion parties. Check the Calendar to find them or ask Helyo Mendes (helyomendes@secondlife.com).

Where?

The Second Pride Festival 2009 will be held on six mainland sims (= simulations) called Ruthenium, Rhodium, Osmium, Iridium, Platinum and Palladium. **Until the time of the Festival, those sims will not contain any content mentioned above as they belong to Linden Lab™.
The Second Pride HeadQuarters building is located on a sim called "Dombersnark". The HQ is at ground level and contains all the infos about Pride that you will need inworld. Just like internet URLs we have direct teleport links on Second Life called "SURLs". The direct SURL to the Pride HQ is : http://slurl.com/secondlife/Dombersnark/189/75/40 Simply click it here with your Second Life account open to get a teleport button to that location. Welcome to Hopeful Lee

Hello and welcome to my new blog "Hopeful Lee"

I'll be talking about my experiences, adventures, impressions and opinions of my encounters in the great and vast world of Second Life.

This isn't a gossip blog and it never will be. I'm not going to waste my time or your commenting on senseless wars, cat-fights and pissing contests that nobody really cares anything about, other than the very few who are in the battle or writing about the battle. There're way too many wonderful sims, amazing builds, gifted artisists, talented performers, incredible shops & merchandise, excellent scriptors & content creators, really fun events & activities, and so much more to talk about. So if you want gossip, there are a few blogs and publications out there who can fullfil your desires, just not this one. However, if you, like 90% of SL's population don't really care who got there panties in a bunch because of whom or whatever other nonsense is going on with the "Ladies" who Lunch crowd, I will try to provide you with an entertaining, informative, insightful and catfight-free blog and some positive energies to help make all of our SL's a little bit better than they already are.

Much respects to the select few SL blogs and publications out there that have maintained a standard of ethics and an air of dignity. They have improved my SL ten-fold and i am taking my lead from your examples. As much as I really want to mentioned those people here & now, I haven't yet asked for their permission to do so, and that would be disrespectful.

That's really all I have to say at the moment. I'll be making regular posts of interesting content real soon. Meanwhile, if you would like to know a little bit more about me, you can take a peek here ==>> http://www.slprofiles.com/slprofiles.asp?id=28591 Oh yeah, my name's Leland Ansar, but most people just call me Lee....
